A padlock is only as strong as the chain it is paired with. What the nylon sleeve actually does:

Most people assume it is purely cosmetic. It is not. The sleeve does two practical jobs: it keeps moisture away from the nickel-plated links, slowing the surface corrosion that sets in on any metal chain stored outdoors through a wet season — and it stops the chain from scratching the paintwork on your motorcycle tank, bicycle frame, or garden gate. Direct metal-on-paint contact causes abrasion marks quickly, and they are not easy to fix. The sleeve prevents that entirely.

8mm or 10mm — which one do you need:

8mm chain  The right weight for bicycle, scooter, and moped security, and for garden gates and outbuilding doors where moderate resistance is sufficient. Flexible enough to thread through a wheel arch and frame without difficulty, and manageable enough to carry on a bike. Requires bolt croppers to attack, which means noise, time, and visible effort — an effective deterrent against opportunistic theft.

10mm chain  Steps up the link thickness and the force needed to defeat it. The additional mass means heavier equipment is needed to cut through and the attempt takes longer — relevant for motorcycles, higher-value property, and gates securing main driveways or access points where a determined attack is a realistic possibility rather than a theoretical one.

Construction — three layers:

Layer 1 — Hardened steel links. The base material treatment that resists cropping far better than standard mild steel chain of the same diameter. Hardened steel deforms under bolt cropper blades rather than shearing cleanly, which means more force, more time, and more noise for anyone attempting to cut through.

Layer 2 — Nickel plating. Applied to every link surface before sleeving. Creates a corrosion barrier that protects the steel in outdoor environments, damp sheds, and exposed parking locations — an unplated steel chain left outside through a UK winter develops rust that penetrates the link structure and reduces its strength.

Layer 3 — Black nylon sleeve. Woven nylon running the full 1000mm length. Weather protection for the links, scratch protection for whatever the chain is wrapped around, and a clean appearance in use.
